Course aim

This course introduces the student to the foundations of computational biology and bioinformatics. It aims to familiarise students with the computational methods and tools used in current biotechnical practice and at the research frontier.

Course content

Molecular biology fundamentals: central dogma; experimental techniques, gene regulation. Experimental techniques include: standard approaches in bioinformatics (algorithms and statistical techniques for sequences analysis and elements of phylogenetics); standard approaches in computation biology (describing biological networks (network topology, clustering methods, network evolution) and mathematical modelling and computational design of metabolic networks); databases and (modelling) tools.
