Course aim

The aims of this course are to: apply the methodology, knowledge, principles and concepts of systems engineering (SE) acquired through previous components of the program to generate a Conceptual Design Data Pack for a major new engineering system; encourage effective membership of a multi-disciplinary team capable of demonstrating abstract thinking and comprehension of the challenges of applying SE to realistic problems; prepare students for the next level of engineering decision-making required by the group project courses of the program: Engineering Project Execution Planning and System Integration Project 2.

Course content

The students learn how to employ the Systems Engineering methodology, principles and processes that they have gained on previous courses to ensure that the scope of a project is fully captured, defined and traceable to its original direction to ensure that key issues and requirements are not overlooked and the project needs and requirements are properly understood by all parties. The students work closely with their colleagues over a three-month period. During this time they transform the needs identified in a Preliminary Operational Concept Document (P-OCD) for a complex system-of-systems into a complete set of formal, verifiable, unambiguous and traceable requirements that generate value for decision-making input at the next level of engineering. This requires them to develop a Conceptual Design Data Pack (CDDP) for the acquisition of a major new capability from the perspective of a procurer. This data pack comprises a Function and Performance Specification (FPS), Test Concept Document (TCD), Statement of Work (SOW) and Acquisition Business Case (ABC). The course assignments stress the successful completion of the underpinning reasoning and systems engineering work rather than delivery of the CDDP in the appropriate form. In other words: application of feasibility and systems requirements analyses, development of a requirements baseline, identification of appropriate technical performance measures, preparation of value models, development and design of suitable architectures, reducing engineering uncertainty, performing functional analysis and allocation, synthesis and generation of design concepts, and analysis and control of the system from the perspective of key decision-making processes, test and evaluation requirements, verification and validation, and reliability testing.
