To introduce students to the concepts of tissue adaptation and reaction to disease at the cellular and molecular level and how these changes manifest as the signs and symptoms of disease.
Concepts of disease. Cell degeneration / adaptation; atrophy; hypertrophy; cell death, necrosis and apoptosis; reversible cell injury; hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia.
Inflammation and repair; cell and molecular events in acute / chronic inflammation, chemical mediators of inflammation, tissue repair, pain mechanisms.
Neoplasia; cell and molecular carcinogenesis.
Circulatory and haemostasis pathology; thrombosis, embolism, infarction, circulatory shock.
Lifestyle and age related conditions.
Pathology of cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine and reproductive systems, GIT, neural and musculo-skeletal systems.
Infectious diseases, host parasite relationships. Bacterial and viral virulence factors, regulation of virulence factors, evolution of virulence. Antimicrobial agents and resistance.
