To provide an understanding of the laws relating to the environment.
As a field of study, environmental law deals with the rules, relationships, systems and processes by which environmental protection is achieved. The process of environmental protection or achieving sustainability involves multiple stakeholders of which corporations are but one. This course focuses on the role that corporations can play in environmental protection and the responsibilities that are now attaching to corporations and their officers to encourage sound environmental practice. Topics include the relationship of international environmental law to multi-national corporations; legal principles of sustainable development; ethical aspects of environmental law and implications for companies; legislative drivers at commonwealth and state level; director’s responsibilities; economic incentives; environmental reporting; socially responsible investment; carbon markets and climate change.
