Lasers and light emitting diodes (LED’s) are utilized in virtually all facets of society today, from industry (machining, welding, location, safety and protection devices) to medicine (surgery, diagnostics) to retail to entertainment (CD/DVD, mobile phone/MP3 players, digital media devices). This course aims to provide students with both an appreciation of the broad range of laser and diode related optical sources and systems, optoelectronic devices and optical systems, presenting both the technical knowledge of their design, fabrication and their applications.
Terminology, Lasers – basics and developments, Hetero-junctions, Materials and processes, Detectors, Diode sources – LED’s, lasers, Next generation structures, Integrated optics, Quantum well devices, Quantum dots, Super lattices, High power lasers, Tuneable lasers, Pulsed lasers, Ultra short pulse systems, Applications – Industry, Medicine, Defence, Commercial, Recreational, Lighting, the Home. CCD & CMOS detectors.
