To enhance students' capacity for critical analysis of contemporary security issues, and to consolidate the skills of interpreting the significance and consequences of current events in the international arena.
The students will engage critically with contemporary issues and conceptual frameworks in global and regional security studies. The course allows for analyzing the interdependence between theory and practice in the context of the current transformation of security, making use of concepts such as securitization to understand the parameters of world order/s, the issue of rogue and failed states, economies of war and privatising of security. Students will explore other concepts and theories including the theory of democratic peace, the role of religion in world politics, nuclear proliferation and clash of fundamentalisms. To understand these transformation students would explore various instruments of international relations, such as the unilateral use of force (prevention and deterrence) or alliance politics.
