Course aim

To further extend students’ spoken and written communication skills in Modern Standard Arabic at the post-intermediate level and further develop critical literacy with reference to authentic materials and intercultural aspects integral to the language contexts covered.

Course content

Critical reading and analysis; specialised vocabulary related to a range of themes and contexts (writing lists, short messages, postcards, and letters; explaining reasons and expressing obligation, describing future plans; describing people and state of affair; describing feelings and activities; making and accepting requests; giving directions; understanding and developing advertisements; describing countries and cities; describing climates and economies; relations between the sexes, etc.); consolidation of grammatical concepts and structures (such as adverbs of time and place; conditional sentences; asking about quantity; using exception in MSA; patterns of verb, types of Maa; etc.) with focus on the grammar of use; opinion, fact, evidence, argument; developing cohesion and coherence; intercultural knowledge integral to the range of situations and tasks in the language texts

Students must enrol concurrently in the equivalent Deakin University online course AIB352 Arabic 3B via cross-institutional enrolment. On successful completion of the Deakin University course students must apply for credit at UniSA.
