Course aim

To develop students' understanding of the architect's varied roles in building procurement, employer needs related to professional architectural practice, and the processes of planning approval for building developments.

Course content

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the social, ethical, and cultural values relevant to architectural practice and the impacts on project users and broader communities. Students will develop knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements; obligations related to obtaining planning approval for a building development in South Australia; the processes involved in negotiating planning regulations and associated advice to clients; an understanding of the architect's evolving role in the procurement of building projects; the varied relationships in a building project between architects, clients, consultants, and contractors; employer needs and expectations across a variety of architectural practice sizes; and knowledge of appropriate verbal, written, and visual means to communicate relevant aspects of architecture.

Students will develop and apply skills and knowledge specific to NSCA (National Standard of Competency for Architects) criteria: 1.5, 1.7, 2.3, 3.6, and 9.1.
