Introduce students to the emerging field of games studies, fulfilling a need for an examination of this expanding and influential medium from social, cultural, political and aesthetic perspectives, and introduce them to video game software and narrative through the creation of a piece of machinima (‘machine animation’)
The history of computer games and the games industry; platforms; games and ‘moral panics’; interactive narrative and ‘gameplay’; history of machinima; tools of machinima; storyboarding a machinima production; video editing software, audio editing software.
