The course aims to present to students a selection of physical processes and their outcomes that have constructed, modified and otherwise influenced coastal environments; an overview of recent global climatic changes and related changes of sea level; estuarine, wave-dominated and tidal-dominated coastal environments; examples of social and recreational interaction of people and coastal environments; examples of the impact of human activity in coastal management; coastal environment industry; the roles of mangroves, sea grasses and other coastal vegetation in sedimentation; the shelly invertebrate organisms that inhabit and contribute to coastal sediments, marine fauna and flora. Coastal zonation planning and policy. Coastal management strategies.
Coastal environments, processes and management strategies. Waves, tides, currents, climate and sea-level change, coastal sediment characteristics, coastal geomorphology, coastal biota as environmental proxies, marine fauna and flora, the Adelaide coastline, reefs and atolls, erosional coastlines, depositional coastlines, estuaries, coastal engineering, coastal planning and zonation, coastal management strategies.
