Preservation Principles

Course aim

To ensure students are familiar with preservation principles and strategies; and to assist students to conduct a preservation survey, develop a disaster preparedness plan and a preservation program.

Course content

The importance of preservation; significance; factors which cause deterioration; preventive strategies - environmental issues, housing, integrated pest management; disaster preparedness; ethics; culturally sensitive materials; conservation treatments – traditional and modern; preservation surveys; education of collection users and staff; reformatting; QA - standards and guidelines; supporting exhibitions; preservation policies and programs - local, national and international; links with digital preservation; keeping-up-to-date.
