Course aim

To provide education in the area of remote sensing technology and its application in the environmental sciences.

Course content

This applied science course introduces students to the science, art and uses of remotely sensed data with a focus on Passive Multispectral Satellite Remote Sensing. Topics covered include: Sensors used in remote sensing. Atmospheric transmission. Factors affecting spectral reflectance and emittance of objects on the earth's surface. Field measurements of reflectance. Image radiometric calibration. Image geometric calibration. Spectral signatures. Digital image display. Processing and Analysis of multispectral images. Simple filtering techniques. Spectral Indices, Unsupervised and supervised classification. Ground truth collection. Accuracy assessment. Change detection. Terrain analysis. Applications of remote sensing to environmental problems.
