Microbiology

Course aim

To introduce students to the general principles of microbiology and to provide a basis for the further studies in clinical microbiology and molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases.

Course content

Microbial diversity: prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses.  Microbial genetics, physiology and ecology: replication, metabolism, life cycles, cell-cell communication, biofilms, ecosystems.  Human-microbe interactions: the human microbiome, infectious disease, pathogenicity and virulence.  Impact of Microorganisms: harnessing microbes and their products.  Microbial growth control: sterilisation, chemical disinfection and antisepsis.  Antimicrobials: antibiotic structure and targets, susceptibility testing, antibiotic resistance.
