To introduce students to the general principles of microbiology and to provide a basis for the further studies in clinical microbiology and molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases.
Structure of microbes: prokaryotes, eucaryotes, viruses. Microbial growth: quantification, ecology, culture media. Bacteriology: structures, motility, differentiation, identification. Mycology: structures, classification, anti-fungal agents. Protozoology: structures, classification, antiprotozoal agents. Virology: properties, life cycle, cultivation, antiviral agents. Infectious disease: pathogenic mechanisms. Microbial genetics: recombination, plasmids, mobile genetic elements and transposons, gene transfer. Sterilisation, chemical disinfection and antisepsis. Sterility control. Synthetic antibacterial agents. Antibiotics: assay, susceptibility testing, resistance, manufacture and assessment. Other microbial products.
