Course aim

The Role of the Energy Manager provides an overview of the practices of applied energy management. This course integrates the previous three courses by providing learning opportunities in practical day-to-day energy management through planning and implementation of an energy audit at the place of work. The aim of the course is to empower students to competently address all issues pertaining to the use of energy in a manufacturing, building or transport environment, devise energy audits, communicate the findings of audits and related recommendations to a broad audience, and implement the recommendations based on best practice designs.

Course content

  • Role and responsibilities of an energy manager in contemporary organisations 
  • Planning, monitoring, auditing, analysing and reporting: principles and best practices
  • Financial evaluation of energy saving solutions
  • Frameworks for tariff audits, energy audits and process audits 
  • Developing and complying with quality management and quality assurance standards in energy management
  • Conceptualisation, planning, financing and implementing energy projects: case studies
  • Energy savings targets: identifying, planning, costing, budgeting, communicating and implementing - principles and case studies 
  • Life-cycle analysis of energy technologies, and energy saving projects
  • Carbon credits, renewable energy certificates and contemporary financial instruments in the energy sector
  • Energy and its role in operational, annual and strategic planning
  • Managing contemporary energy saving technologies: from heat recovery, energy efficiency technologies, energy storage and tariff management
  • Organisational energy policies and triple bottom line reporting: case studies of ideas and realities
  • Performance contracting, vendor management, and contracting specialist consultants
  • Energy audit: preparing and presenting a case study at the place of work - Assignment work
