Course aim

To introduce students to the source and formation know-how of air pollution from vehicles, control devices and pollution control laws and regulations.

Course content

An overview of air pollution from vehicles; Air pollution effects on environment and human health; Sources and formation of pollutants in automotive engines; Effect of different engine parameters on pollution; Exhaust gas treatments: catalytic converters, thermal reactors and particulate traps; Alternative fuels and their emission characteristics: CNG, LPG, Bio-fuel, Ethanol, Methanol and Hydrogen; Emerging technologies to reduce pollution: Fuel cells, electric and hybrid vehicles; Air pollution measurements and emission estimates; Air pollution control laws and regulations.
