Course aim

To consider ways that student diversity impacts on educational outcomes through investigation of theories relating to society, culture, policies, history and pedagogies and the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples and other marginalised and minority groups in the Australian education system and in the broader Australian society.

Course content

Education as a social institution; cultural capital and critical pedagogy; impacts of class, gender, race and socialisation on education outcomes; racism and race privilege; global influences on education and care; social justice in education, critical multiculturalism, anti-racist education, inclusive education. Key theories, policies and issues are illustrated with reference to (a) the learning experiences of students (b) the experiences of Indigenous peoples and other minority groups in Australian society.
