To advance students' contextual understanding of ethical issues in the rapidly growing media and communication sectors known as 'the creative industries' and to foreground the growing recognition in each of these industries that understanding of applied ethics is a basic workplace skill.
The students will develop understandings gained in their major in Communication, Media and Culture (or in COMM 2066 Corporate and International Public Relations) by being introduced to the basic applied ethical theories of virtue ethics, duty ethics and utilitarianism.
This knowledge will be deployed in the context of the rise of the various 'creative industries' sectors. Work will focus on investigation of real world ethical dilemmas and in developing case study skills in various creative industry situations. Particular emphasis will be given to stakeholder positions regarding censorship, privacy, intellectual property and security, as well as the role of governments in creative industry policy setting.
Industry 'niches' covered will include, but not be limited to, digital communications and the internet, games industries, corporate communications, popular music, broadcasting, advertising, global journalism and photojournalism, reality television, museums, galleries and other 'display media', the fashion industry and the publishing industry.
