Course aim

To enable students to develop advanced skills in critically analysing and applying contemporary family theory, concepts and approaches to assist families in conflict.

Course content

History and policy context of human service practice with families; language, power and dominant family discourses; a family relationship framework; family life cycle development - continuity and change and the impact of crises such as death, separation and divorce; the family as a psychosocial system; contemporary theoretical approaches to practice with families including: intergenerational, constructivist, solution-focused, narrative, critical and feminist approaches, family mediation; gender, power, control and family violence (domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse); child protection; interviewing children, adolescents and older family members with diminished capacity; grief and loss theory and implications for practice; rights discourses; child-centred and elder-centred family intervention strategies; culturally-sensitive and ethical practice; indigenous and international perspectives.
