Course aim

To enable students to develop advanced skills in critically analysing ethical management and resolution of conflict in their area of specialisation.

Course content

The management and resolution of conflict in different contexts; narrative and transformative approaches to mediation; special issues in mediation including ethical standards and dilemmas; mediation and abuses of power; empowerment, social justice and mediation; cross-cultural factors affecting the mediator, the parties and the process - age, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, language and literacy, professional background; mental health issues; the involvement of vulnerable people in mediation, eg. children; the involvement of other professionals, advocates or support persons in mediation; mediating financial disputes; dealing with strong emotions; drafting mediation agreements; appropriate referral techniques; multi-party mediation.
