Media Ethics and Responsibilities

Course aim

To provide students with a theoretical framework from which to examine and analyse ethical dilemmas in the media in general and journalism in particular.

Course content

Ethical perspectives; media and democracy; freedom of speech and censorship; objectivity and bias; the notion of truth; social responsibility; commercial imperatives; dilemmas in journalism; public journalism; setting and maintaining standards; codes of ethics; the Australian context; professional practice; ethical implications of globalisation; ethical implications of the Internet; case studies.
