Communication Practice 2: Applied Industry Research A

Course aim

To enable students to develop and display advanced skills and understandings in relation to applied industry-based or “field” research, within the profession or industry to which their discipline is directed.

Course content

Students design and carry out a program of observational or participant-observation research, within an industry or professional workplace. They produce an extended piece of original and data-rich print or electronic text, on a topic related to their specialist discipline. It takes the form of a theorised report on an issue of key importance. Research is carried out under the supervision of experienced research staff and/or their approved nominee/mentor from industry. The project should display a thorough knowledge of contemporary practices and methods in relation to applied research techniques and principles. It should include a critical and reflexive awareness of the methods used, and extended insight into key issues in the relevant industry or profession. The project should make a significant and original contribution to knowledge and applied understandings in its field. It may employ innovative presentational practice, including electronic data searching and exchange, and report lodgement and presentation media.
