Communication systems are increasingly important to society. The aim of this course is to introduce the transmission and coding principles that allow the reliable delivery of information by modern communication systems.
Source coding techniques for lossless and lossy compression, Huffman codes, Noisless coding Theorem. Digital modulation methods and QAM modem architectures. Optimum receivers for AWGN channels: Matched filter receiver; Maximum-likelihood and MAP detectors; BER performance, Link budgets. Information theory: Mutual information; Channel capacity. Channel coding: Linear block codes;syndrome decision decoding techniques; spectral efficiency versus SNR.
NOTE: Conceded and Terminating passes will be available to undergraduates taking this course but not to postgraduates.
