Course aim

Communication systems are increasingly important to society. The aim of this course is to introduce the transmission and coding principles that allow the reliable delivery of information by modern communication systems.

Course content

Source coding techniques for lossless and lossy compression. Digital modulation methods and modem architectures. Optimum receivers for AWGN channels: Matched filter receiver; Maximum-likelihood and MAP detectors; BER performance. Information theory: Mutual information; Channel capacity. Channel coding: Linear block codes; hard and soft decision decoding techniques.

NOTE: Conceded and Terminating passes will be available to undergraduates taking this course but not to postgraduates.
