Course aim

To develop students’ advanced competence in applying knowledge of design processes, strategies, and practices to design projects of moderate complexity which focus on contemporary issues of sustainable design and development.

Course content

Students will develop and apply skills and knowledge of architectural design processes by investigating physical, cultural, social, ethical, and economic issues in sustainable design. Students will further develop their knowledge of the relationship between architectural design and sustainability through studies of human thermal comfort, passive and active environmental modification, energy and resources management, and ecological impact. Students will apply design strategies in the materials selection process, occupant health, and environmental design into construction strategies.

Students will develop and apply skills and knowledge specific to NSCA (National Standard of Competency for Architects) criteria: 3.3 and 4.7.
