To provide students with historical insights into and in-depth understanding of: the societal characteristics, domestic political situations, economic development and foreign relations of Southeast Asian societies and major current developments affecting the region, including its relations with Australia.
Socio-cultural aspects of Southeast Asian societies; Western colonialism and its impact; indigenous responses; the Japanese period in Southeast Asian history; problems of nationhood and nation building; economic development; emergence and development of ASEAN; Southeast Asia in the global context; the Asian crisis and its aftermath; Australia and Southeast Asia relations.
