To introduce students to the history, culture, politics and economics of the Northeast Asian region, from the mid-19th century and to develop students’ sound knowledge of the major events, factors and trends shaping the region and the significance of current developments in China and Japan upon the region and the world.
Northeast Asia setting; Foundations of East Asian Civilizations; Divergent responses to the challenge of the West; Modernization of Japan from the Meiji Restoration and impact; Chinese revolution and implication; World War II and its aftermath; Impact of the Cold War; Integration into the regional and global economy; Current political, social and security dimensions in the region; Greater China; Australia and East Asia Relations.
