Course aim

To provide an in-depth understanding of selected Internet protocols (especially at the transport layer) including the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and to gain more advanced modelling and analysis skills required for the rigorous design of practical protocols via a structured project. Secondly, to provide some breadth of understanding of selected computer networking topics via guest lectures. The aim is to build on the foundations provided by the prerequisite courses.

Course content

IP Revision,Transmission Control Protocol, User Datagram Protocol, notion of Service provided by a protocol, modelling of protocols and services; behavioural analysis of protocols; and selected topics on Internet infrastructure and applications such as: Datagram Congestion Control Protocol; Web Protocols, particularly the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP); Electronic commerce (the Internet Open Trading Protocol); Web services; Mobile IP; Mobile Data (eg the Wireless Application Protocol, Multimedia Message Service); Real Time Protocol; Multimedia over Packet Networks (ITU-T Recommendations H.323, H.245, SIP); Domain Name System; Middleware: Object Management Architecture, object request brokers (CORBA, OLE/COM), services (trading, naming, event, transaction, security), interorb protocols (eg the Internet Interorb protocol)
NOTE: conceded and terminating passes be available to undergraduates taking this course but not to postgraduates
