Course aim

To develop knowledge and skills required to design simple data communication and networking solutions to suit data communication requirements of engineering systems.

Course content

Basic data communications and networking concepts: channel and transmission, multiplexing, circuit and packet switching, peer-to-peer and client-server models, layered protocol stacks, the Internet.

Data Link, Network and Transport layers: functions, basic protocol mechanisms, TCP/IP suite of protocols.

Principles of Medium Access Control. Ethernet, WiFi, wireless technologies for Personal Area and resource-constrained networking. 

Selected application services and protocols: DNS, HTTP and www, SMTP.

Introduction to the Internet of Things and loT data transfer protocols (CoAP, MQTT).
