To investigate the cultural constructions of gender and to develop students' understanding of key themes, issues and art practices that address gender, identity and sexuality.
Students will develop knowledge concerning the cultural production of ‘woman’ as a sign, as other, as a site of sexuality and masculine desire. Students will gain critical skills to address the relations between sex, gender and representation; the development within the visual arts of ideas such as identity, desire, difference and gender as performance and masquerade; new masculinities, the motherhood wars, fashion, the body and ‘image makeovers’.
