Environmental Conflict and Public Consultation

Course aim

1. Ability to assess the sources of environmental conflict, recognizing the importance of values and various social discourses, in order to devise strategies to guide the search for common ground and build consensual outcomes through fair and equitable participation.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in designing and implementing a consultation process to meet agency objectives, while integrating a set of public engagement and evaluation principles.

Course content

Overview of environmental conflicts in the public arena; analysis of approaches to conflict resolution over land use, recreation and tourism; the continuum of community engagement from information provision to consultation and collaboration; scoping of issues and identification of stakeholder interests; Dryzek’s environmental discourses; use of consultation planning process to design participatory processes for various situations; theory and practice of communication skills and group facilitation; portrayal of environmental conflicts in the media.
