Journalism Studies

Course aim

To provide students with a theoretical framework from which to examine and analyse contemporary journalism in its many forms and styles, and to understand the values, including ethical values, which underlie journalism.

Course content

Students will develop occupational knowledge of different forms and styles of journalism, and of the professional and ethical values which underlie them. Topics addressed include the relationship between the news media and democracy; the implications of globalisation; freedom of speech and censorship; ethical perspectives; objectivity and bias; the notion of truth in journalism; standards and accountability; reporting diversity; professional practice.
