Course aim

To introduce the concepts and components of a geographic information system (GIS) and teach the essential skills of operating a functional GIS through the use of ArcGIS software package.

Course content

By completing this course, students will learn the key GIS concepts including spatial data structures, data sources and transfer methods, projections and coordinate systems, geo-referencing, metadata and geo-database design. Students will be able to recognise various GIS formats and perform spatial query and display, spatial analysis using census and network data and automate the processes using model builder. This course will introduce a few selected cases of GIS application in different disciplines. Concepts presented in lecture will be put into practice through hands-on laboratory exercises utilising the GIS software product ArcGIS 10.x (ESRI, Inc.)
