To introduce students to fundamentals of engineering electromagnetic compatibility and provide them with an understanding of sources, characterisation and protective measures against electromagnetic interferences to be applied in engineering practice.
Basic concepts of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Natural and nuclear sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI from apparatus and circuits. Magnetic fields and biological systems. Measurements of radiated and conducted EMI. Pulsed interference immunity. Protective measures against EMI (grounding, shielding, bonding, EMI filters, cables, connectors and components). Frequency spectrum conservation. EMC standards and their interpretation. EMI/EMC modeling techniques. EMC in large systems.
NOTE: conceded and terminating passes be available to undergraduates taking this course but not to postgraduates.
