Course aim

To develop students’ understanding of everyday life in the modern/postmodern city cultures.

Course content

Time/space compression in the postmodern city; consumption/consumerism; globalisation and cosmopolitanism; perceptual and affective landscapes; permeability of ‘public/private’ boundaries; poetics, routines, movement; diversity, plurality, power; memory and nostalgia; ‘public’ discourses and practices of social differentiation and control; local practices - narratives, place-making strategies; walking through the city (engaging in ‘fascinated’ versus ‘thick description’).
