Course aim

To consolidate students’ mastery in applying design research processes, strategies, and practices to understanding the design of a range of building scales in their social, environmental, cultural, and ideological context through a year-long architectural design project.

Course content

Students will further develop and apply skills and knowledge through the detailed design of buildings in response to social, environmental, cultural, and ideological contexts, from the micro to macro scale; including physical and meta-physical issues in design; symbolism, metaphor, tectonics, and technology and their integration in design; compositional theories, strategies, and techniques applied to the design and schematic resolution of complex buildings and urban environments; professional responsibilities to clients, society, and the environment; collaborative processes and the professional team; and social responsibility and the development process.

Students will demonstrate competence in understanding knowledge of the regulations, standards, and codes relevant to all aspects of architectural practice, project design and delivery; social, ethical and cultural values relevant to architectural practice and the impacts on project users and broader communities; the responsibility of architects to minimise the impact on natural resources and design for longevity; histories and theories relevant to architecture, practice, building and technologies; and knowledge of appropriate verbal, written, and visual means to communicate relevant aspects of architecture.

Students will develop and apply skills and knowledge specific to NSCA (National Standard of Competency for Architects) criteria: 1.7, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.5, 3.8, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.6, 5.1, and 5.2.
