To enable students to explore and refine their understanding of the historical development of and current trends in media technologies and international communication.
Students will build upon general theories of communication and the media to examine the role of communication technology in mediating our experience of contemporary social life in an increasingly globally interconnected world. By mapping the emergence of various different forms of technology, the course examines its relationship to shifts in the nature of capitalism and popular culture and the consequences for communications policy. Amongst other topics, the course examines the significance of the internet in the formation of self-identity and new forms of group protest, explores theories about technology and new world orders, and considers likely future trends in technology and society.
