Course aim

To critically examine the inner-dynamics leading to the formation and evolution of the European Union (EU) and analyse the role and impact of EU as an international actor.

Course content

Theoretical approaches to inter-regional cooperation and economic and political integration; the origins of European integration; integration theories; treaties and agreements aimed at European integration; the institutions of the European Union; the integrating force of regionalism; integration pressures in the areas of foreign and security policies; enlargement of the European Union; relevance of European integration initiatives for other regions; EU’s expanding role as a key global geo-political and economic actor; EU’s responses to global environmental change, human security and human development issues.
