Sustainable Ecosystems

Course aim

To introduce the principles of ecology and biodiversity and familiarise students with flora and fauna of Australian ecosystems through practical methods of studying plants and animals in the field, the lab and the greenhouse.

Course content

In this course students learn principles of ecology and evolution as they relate to Australian ecosystems. Complex ecosystems are described by their biotic and abiotic components, structure, and function. Ecosystem management is discussed with the objective to conserve natural habitat and maintain the integrity of ecosystem functions. Practical laboratory skills include plant propagation, biological survey methods, and survey reporting.
