The aims of this course are to introduce students to the analysis and design of simple building structures according to relevant codes and regulations (Superstructure), and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (Substructure).
Superstructure
Structural design process, structural materials, loads, structural framing, design brief, steel purlins and girts, steel pin-jointed trusses, reinforced concrete beams and slabs, steel beams, columns, portal frames, bracing and connections. Concrete mix design and concrete material, design capacity tables, timber as structural material, composite materials, other structural materials, load paths, pre-testing and post-testing. Structural property of timber, timber framing code (as illustration of the concepts).
Substructure
Introduction to geomechanics, subsoil investigation processes, landslides and slope stability management, ground problems, ground improvement, footing, road pavement.
