Course aim

To acquaint students with the processes of long-term planning and evaluation of the English curriculum as well as individual reporting and assessment strategies; to provide students with the skills and understandings to operate as independent teachers in the classroom, particularly as teachers of English to Aboriginal children from non-English speaking homes.

Course content

The examination of short and long term aims and objectives and the incorporation of national curriculum and other guidelines in the planning process; identification and the application of relevant teaching strategies; timetabling and an examination of assessment, evaluation and reporting –systematic recording of students’ achievements/ needs in a variety of formats; analysis of student records; awareness of procedures for reporting to parents/care givers.

Observation report - methods of assessing English learning, Observation report - reading records / progressive writing samples, Plan - 3 week English program, using SACSA framework, ESL, Presentation /evaluation of 3 week plan in teaching practice, Timetabling exercises - daily, weekly and term, Written report - critical review of the SACSA framework, ESL, Written report - integrated curriculum, Written report - teacher's responsibility for assessment etc
