Course aim

To familiarise students with the sequence of children’s development from conception to 3 years of age, as well as the influences and processes involved in very young children’s development.

Course content

Students will develop an understanding of theories, themes and principles of child development. Students will learn about sequences of physical, social, emotional, communicative and cognitive development from conception to three years of age, the processes involved and the influences on development. Students will focus on the critical importance of environments (including the roles of sensory stimulation, of language input, of families and culture, of nutrition, and of protection from harm) for developmental outcomes. Students will develop understandings about the value of objective observations, will acquire techniques for documenting objective observations, and will be able to use their observations to assess individual children’s development and recommend developmental supports.
