Course aim
To develop students' knowledge of the role of television within society.
Course content
Students will develop knowledge of connections between television, society and popular culture that are analysed to uncover the vital role of television in mediating between and expressing our public and private lives.The social, economic and institutional contexts within which television is situated are considered, including the historic and contemporary structure of television programming, the distinctions between television genres (advertising, news, sports, current affairs, soap opera, teen TV) and the significance of television audiences. Recent development in the industry such as the rise of cult television, trans-media narration, on-line fandoms and the digital television are also examined as they relate to the changing relationship between the public/private spheres and issues of globalisation.
