To introduce students to the historic, industrial and formal components that shape film and media, as well as the major critical theories of screen studies.
Students are introduced to the historic and industrial development of film, television and digital media, as they connect with different storytelling strategies, and the influence of film style on form and critical interpretation and the theoretical movements that have shaped screen studies.
Narrative, audience and industry are studied in relation to classical Hollywood and European art cinemas, New Hollywood, television and seriality, digital convergence and the contemporary entertainment industries. Film style is approached in relation to mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound in Hollywood cinema and its alternatives. The critical introduction to film and media theory includes a focus on genre criticism, authorship and auteurism, ideological analyses, feminist film theory, national cinemas and globalisation.
