Course aim

To introduce students to the design of simple building components according to relevant codes (Superstructure), and to the principles and application of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (Substructure).

Course content

Superstructure: Structural design process, structural materials, loads, structural framing, design brief, steel purlins and girts, steel pin-jointed trusses, reinforced concrete beams and slabs, steel beams, columns, portal frames, bracing and connections.
 
Substructure: Introduction to soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, site investigation processes, expansive soils, design and maintenance of residential footings on expansive soils, collapsing and compressible soils, ground compaction and stabilisation, footing types, bearing capacity and settlement, slope stability and earth retaining structures.
