United States Politics and Global Primacy

Course aim

To introduce students to critical analysis of the distinctive national politics of the USA, and interconnections between US national politics, US foreign relations, US power and global power patterns.

Course content

To introduce students to critical analysis of the interplay of US national politics including the American Revolution, the US political system, institutional politics and capitalism, racism and social conservatism in US political culture, national electoral politics, social inequality and public policy. To introduce students to critical analysis of the interplay of US domestic politics and international factors in United States foreign relations, including Manifest Destiny, the Monroe Doctrine and US hegemony in the Americas; military, economic and political interactions in sustained US global engagement since 1941; Cold War containment and the American War in Vietnam; US relations with Europe, the Arab-Israeli dispute; terrorism and US homeland security; and sustainability of US global primacy.
