Pharmacology and Pathophysiology 2

Course aim

To provide students with knowledge of the pathophysiology of the following major human organ systems: cardiovascular, endocrine, renal, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, musculo-skeletal, and the central nervous system (CNS) and develop an understanding of the mechanism of action of therapeutic agents used to modify these systems.

Course content

This will include the underlying pathophysiology of the disease states and pharmacology of the drugs relevant to: metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids; cardiovascular diseases; endocrine disorders; disorders of the renal and urogenital systems; respiratory disorders; gastrointestinal disorders; inflammatory and musculo-skeletal disorders; brain circuits, CNS neurotransmitters and receptors; neurological and psychiatric disorders, management of pain; drugs with abuse potential, including ‘lifestyle' drugs such as performance-enhancing drugs.
