Pharmacology and Pathophysiology 1

Course aim

To develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of drug action and the basic pathology of human disease with an emphasis on infectious disease, immunology and cancer.

Course content

Fundamentals of pathology and of drug actions, including: cellular responses to stress and noxious stimuli, cell death, inflammation and tissue repair, neoplasia, mechanisms of disease; mechanisms of drug action and toxicity, receptors, agonists and antagonists; drug tolerance and dependence; the autonomic and somatic nervous systems, and drugs affecting these systems; nucleotide metabolism, synthesis of proteins and amino acids; diversity of microorganisms, microbial pathogenesis, infectious diseases; anti-infective agents, their mechanism of action and development of resistance; structure and function of the immune system and immune diseases; monoclonal antibodies, transplantation, vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs; mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, cancer therapeutics, target organ toxicity, teratogenesis.
