Course aim

To obtain knowledge of the broad context of the library information environment, understand the principles associated with information seeking, information infrastructure and its application within libraries particularly surrounding the delivery of information services, and contribute to knowledge generation and sharing to improve the business functions of libraries.

Course content

The storage and retrieval of knowledge is a key component of the library business processes which are supported by library information systems and information technology. It is intended that this course will provide an insight into the nature of information systems with specific reference to libraries and how modern libraries provide information services today. An appreciation of the role of information systems in libraries, the importance of information systems technology, identification of fundamental types of information systems, the need for an effective information systems development process, selection, support, evaluation and administration of ILMS (Integrated Library Management Systems); library services with applications to institutional repositories, relational database development and management; web development and services (including Web2.0 and managing and preserving dynamic websites); network environments, and security.
