Course aim

To ensure students are familiar with the requirements and principles of virtual archiving to enable students to manage electronic records and other digital objects through to preservation and to provide the skills and knowledge required to successfully transfer electronic records and other electronic resources to digital archive/cold storage.

Course content

  • Exploring the records continuum model in the context of virtual archiving inter-relationships
  • Defining virtual archiving in the context of a records management governance framework, archival management and the processes required to execute records transfer
  • Examining VERS encapsulation methodology in the context of International encapsulation models
  • Analyse EDRM system design requirements for record encapsulation
  • Examine metadata capture in the context of multiple web and Boolean search engines
  • Exploring XML as a preferred long-term preservation format
  • Processing record transfers to facilitate appropriate custody and access
  • Explore EDRMS archival functionality
